Short answer: BHB capsules can raise ketones in your blood for a short time. We found no solid human evidence that this adds to weight or fat loss beyond what diet and activity already do.
Capsules such as the one on the AltBurn Keto page are sold on the idea that you can get the benefits of ketosis without cutting out carbohydrates. Here is what ketosis is, what the trials show and where the gaps are. We do not claim AltBurn Keto causes weight loss, and none of this is medical advice.
How ketosis works
Your body usually runs on glucose from carbohydrate. When you eat very little carbohydrate for several days, or fast, your liver starts making ketone bodies from fat, and many tissues, including the brain, can use them for fuel. The main ketone is beta-hydroxybutyrate, or BHB. This state is called nutritional ketosis.
Two things are worth noticing. First, ketosis is a result of how you eat, and the fat being burned comes largely from your own stores only when you are eating less energy than you use. Second, ketones are made because carbohydrate is low and insulin is low. A capsule changes neither of those conditions.
Nutritional ketosis vs exogenous ketones
| Nutritional ketosis (diet) | Exogenous ketones (capsules, drinks) | |
|---|---|---|
| How you get ketones | Your liver makes them when carbohydrate is very low | You swallow them, usually as mineral salts or esters |
| Timing | Takes days of low carbohydrate | Blood ketones rise within an hour or so, then fall |
| Carbohydrate and insulin | Both low | Unchanged by the capsule |
| What else comes with it | A major change in how you eat | Minerals (sodium, calcium, magnesium) and any other ingredients in the capsule |
| Long-term research | Some, with mixed results | Limited |
So taking BHB is not the same as being in ketosis from diet. Your blood test may show ketones either way, but the body is doing something quite different.
What human trials show
We looked up published trials rather than relying on the product page. Here is what we found.
- Blood ketones go up. A meta-analysis of 30 studies (408 participants) found that exogenous ketones raised blood BHB and lowered blood glucose in the short term (PubMed 37327753). A second review of 43 trials found the same pattern, with larger effects from ketone monoesters than from salts, and limited evidence on prolonged supplementation (PubMed 35380602). AltBurn Keto uses salts.
- Weight and fat loss is less clear. In an 8-week randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 51 adults ate a modestly reduced-calorie diet and took either BHB mineral salts or a placebo twice a day. Both groups lost weight. The BHB group showed a within-group fall in fat mass of about 2 kg, but the differences between the BHB and placebo groups were not statistically significant (PubMed 41305632). In plain words, the trial cannot tell us the capsule did the work, since the placebo group changed too, and it was a small study.
- Exercise performance did not improve in a small test. In a crossover trial of 10 recreational runners, a BHB salt plus MCT supplement raised blood ketones but made no significant difference to 5 km time (PubMed 32269653). This is not about weight, but it shows that higher ketones do not automatically mean a better result.
What this adds up to. A capsule can change a blood test. We did not find strong human evidence that it changes the number on the scales over and above what you eat and how much you move. Studies are mostly small and short, and many are funded or run by people with an interest in ketone products, so look for bigger, longer, independent trials before believing a bold claim.
Why BHB does not replace diet
Weight change comes mostly from the balance of the energy you eat and the energy you use. A capsule has very few kilojoules of its own and cannot cancel out a meal. Healthdirect notes that there is little evidence for keto diets for long-term weight loss, even before you consider capsules, which have even less long-term research behind them. If a seller says you can eat as usual and still lose weight, ask for the trial that shows it.
It also helps to be sceptical about early scale drops. When you cut carbohydrate or eat less, you lose water along with some fat, so the first few kilograms often move faster than the long-run rate.
What realistic weight loss looks like in Australia
Better Health Victoria says that losing about half a kilogram to one kilogram a week is considered reasonable and more likely to be maintained. It adds that fad diets may lead to short-term loss that comes back once you return to usual habits, and that severe restriction can lower your metabolic rate and cause muscle loss. Its practical suggestions are plain and cheap.
- Make small changes you can keep. Think smaller portions, more vegetables and fewer takeaway nights, rather than a total overhaul.
- Keep a food diary for a week. It shows when you eat late, when you snack out of boredom and what the weekend really looks like.
- Move most days. Around 30 minutes of moderate activity a day is a common target. A walk after dinner counts.
- Track your waist, not just the scales. Better Health Victoria gives under 94 cm for men and under 80 cm for women as a guide.
- Get help. Your GP can check your health and refer you to an accredited practising dietitian. The Dietitians Australia line listed on healthdirect is 1800 812 942.
If you are curious about the eating pattern itself, our keto diet guide for Australian beginners covers what it involves and the "keto flu".
What a supplement can and cannot do
| It may | It cannot |
|---|---|
| Raise blood BHB for a short period | Make you lose weight without changing how you eat or move |
| Bring a few minerals and some caffeine into your day | Cancel out a high-kilojoule diet |
| Fit into a routine you find motivating | Replace advice from your GP or dietitian |
| Suit some healthy adults with no medical reasons to avoid it | Be safe for everyone. Diabetes, kidney disease, pregnancy and some medicines need a check first |
| Be returned under the seller's refund terms | Override your rights under Australian Consumer Law, which a seller's policy cannot remove |
What to ask before buying any keto capsule
- What is the dose of each ingredient, in milligrams?
- Is there an AUST L or AUST R number I can search on the TGA's ARTG database?
- Is there an independent lab report?
- Which trial supports the claim, and was it on the same product and dose?
- What are the full refund terms, who pays for return postage and is an auto-refill box ticked?
- Do I have a condition or take a medicine that means I should ask my pharmacist first? Our side effects guide lists them.
For AltBurn Keto specifically, the seller says each serve has an 800 mg blend of BHB salts, green tea extract and apple cider vinegar, but does not give the individual amounts. We could not compare that capsule with the doses used in the trials above.
Frequently asked questions
Do BHB keto capsules help you lose weight?
Trials show they can raise blood ketones for a short time. We found no solid evidence that this leads to extra weight or fat loss compared with placebo when diet is the same.
Will BHB capsules put me into ketosis?
They can raise ketones in the blood temporarily, but that is not the same as nutritional ketosis, which comes from eating very little carbohydrate over days.
Can I eat what I like if I take BHB capsules?
No. Capsules do not cancel out the energy you eat. Weight change still depends mainly on what you eat, how much you move and how long you keep it up.
How much weight is realistic to lose in a week?
Better Health Victoria says about half to one kilogram a week is considered reasonable and more likely to be maintained. Early drops can be water.
Are keto supplements better than a keto diet?
They are different things. Healthdirect says there is little evidence for keto diets for long-term weight loss, and capsules have even less long-term research behind them.
What should I ask before buying a keto capsule?
Ask for the dose of each ingredient, the ARTG number, a lab report, the full refund terms and whether there is an auto-refill option, and check with your GP or pharmacist if you take medicines.
